The past two decades have witnessed an unparalleled expansion in European cooperation in the higher education field. Major European programs such as Erasmus and Tempus, themselves the reflection of the larger macro-political agenda for integration and reunification across the continent, have begun to transform the essentially national character of higher education systems. Erasmus Eligible Institutions >> This website provides information on the European Universities that participate in the Erasmus program and therefore have experience with international student exchanges.
TEMPUS >> The Tempus program includes three different headings, targeting various neighbouring regions surrounding the Union: TACIS, CARDS and META. Tempus was developed to assist tertiary educational development and student mobility with EU partner countries through Joint European Projects (JEPs) and Individual Mobility Grants (IMGs).
SOCRATES >> This is the general program heading or action pathway, for educational initiatives within the European Union (EU). Under this program there are 5 'gateways to education' (3 are listed below).
ERASMUS >> Socrates/Erasmus is a program for higher educational student and teacher mobility within the EU aimed at creating a 'European' dimension to education through the improvement of language skills, joint curriculum development and creation of networks for student exchange. It is under Socrates-Erasmus where the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) is utilized.
GRUNDTVIG >> Having a more targeted approach to life long learning, GRUNDTVIG assists higher education for the adult population in Europe through improved access, intercultural awareness initiatives and training to allow for re-entry into the workforce or improvement upon skills to enhance participants capacity to succeed.
MINERVA >> This action was developed in order to promote European co-operation in the fields of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) through enhanced usage of ICT in classrooms and enhanced access for improved teacher methodology.

Joint Programmes: EU-USA >> and EU-Canada >> These bilateral agreements on tertiary education initiatives funded in co-operation with FIPSE in the US and HDRC in Canada, began in 1990 and are up for renewal in 2005. The main focus is on student mobility, with interest in creating greater institutional and curricula harmonization, increased people-to-people collaboration and enhanced understanding through cultural exchange.
