Nominate Your Program: 2010 Andrew Heiskell Awards

About IIE's Andrew Heiskell Awards

The Institute of International Education created these awards in 2001 to promote and honor the most outstanding initiatives being conducted in international higher education by IIENetwork member universities and colleges.

The goals of IIE's Heiskell Awards are:

  • To foster innovative ideas that will help international education professionals create and sustain new opportunities for students and faculty
  • To bring international education to the forefront of education policy
  • And to stimulate public awareness of the benefits of study abroad and international educational exchange
IIE's Heiskell Awards showcase the most innovative and successful models for internationalization of campuses, study abroad, and faculty programs in practice today. We are particularly interested in highlighting initiatives that remove institutional barriers and broaden the base of participation in international teaching and learning on campus.

By recognizing excellence and innovation, the Institute hopes to encourage the expansion and creation of programs based on these successful models.

Winning programs will be featured on IIE's "Best Practices in Internationalization" website, and will be recognized at the Fifth Annual IIE Best Practices Conference in New York on March 19, 2010.

Winners of the 2010 Special Category: Study Abroad at the Community College will be recognized separately at the “Promoting Study Abroad at the Community College: What Works Best” in Houston on February 19th.

The Andrew Heiskell Awards Categories

Category 1: Internationalizing the Campus- *2010 Special Focus on Internationalizing Engineering Programs:

Category 2: Study Abroad:

Category 3: International Partnerships

*Special 2010 Category: Study Abroad at the Community College
Providing innovative programs and services that make study abroad more accessible to students at community colleges. (IIE & AACC members are eligible to apply).

Note: With the exception of the category Internationalizing the Campus, please submit nominations which focus on particular programs or initiatives, rather than including all campus programs in one nomination.

    Heiskell Awards Selection Criteria

The Heiskell Awards were specifically created to reward innovation and foster new ideas and new opportunities. A winning initiative does not have to be the biggest or oldest. It should bring new approaches and new resources to bear on addressing a need or taking advantage of a new opportunity. We will showcase winning programs (as well as other finalists and noteworthy nominations) as "best practices".

In selecting winners, the Selection Panel considers the degree to which the program achieves success in some of the following areas. However, not all of these guidelines are applicable to each program.

    • Developing an innovative approach
    • Addressing a specific need
    • Taking advantage of a new opportunity
    • Removing barriers or broadening the reach of international education
    • Contributing to internationalization on campus
    • Demonstrating any documented results
    • Developing any public, private or non-profit partnerships
    • Cooperating with institutions in other countries

For profiles of previous winners, please browse the best practices section of the IIENetwork website.
