Every day scholars in some part of the world are threatened, harassed, arrested, tortured or even killed by governments, militants, and extremists who see scholars’ efforts to promote thinking, dialogue, and wider understanding as a threat to their authority and control.
Working with colleges and universities around the world, the Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund assists scholars facing threats or danger in their home countries. The Fund provides fellowships to host colleges and universities welcoming threatened scholars to temporary academic positions on their campuses. The host campuses provide a safe environment for scholars to live and work, as well as professional support and additional financial assistance. When safe return is not assured, SRF staff work with scholars to identify opportunities to continue their work abroad.
The fellowships permit scholars to find temporary refuge at
universities and colleges anywhere in the world, enabling them
to pursue their academic work and to continue to share their
knowledge with students, colleagues and the community at large.
When conditions improve, these scholars will return home to help
rebuild universities and societies ravaged by conflict, repression and
fear.
Since 2002, the Scholar Rescue Fund has received requests for assistance from over 100 countries. The Fund has made over 300 awards to date for scholars hosted by universities in seventeen countries.
