Honorable Mention 2010

Howard Community College

Mexico Language Study Abroad Initiatives

Nomination submitted by:

Christele Cain, Interim International Education Director

Program Overview:

Howard Community College's (HCC) ten-year partnership with Universidad Internacional-The Center for Linguistic and Multicultural Studies (UNITER) in Cuernavaca Mexico has resulted in a truly comprehensive exchange program serving over 300 students. With myriad study abroad programs, student and faculty exchanges, internship opportunities, and community service components, the program has grown along with HCC's internationalization needs. The program has even accommodated needs of the local community, providing Spanish classes for county firefighters and Maryland police officers to provide them with the language training and cultural knowledge necessary for their work throughout the state.

Howard Community College was awarded Honorable Mention in recognition of its program's sustainability and breadth. "The impact of the annual Mexico Language Study Abroad initiatives increases awareness for HCC students, that they are part of a world that extends beyond the physical borders of our countries," says Kathleen Hetherington, President of Howard Community College.
